Over the course of 120 years, the strength of the Christ School community has been tested by wars, natural disasters, and other threats to society.

Through it all, the complexion of the school has not changed much from the one founded in 1900 by Father Thomas Wetmore and his wife, Susan Allen Wetmore.

Dean of Students Drew Hyche ’94 once had the distinct honor of wearing a Christ School blazer. Now he feels privileged to hand out the green jackets to a new group of seniors each year.

Convocation on the hallowed ground of Yard A was a first for Christ School, at least in recent memory.

If not 2020, then when?

Headmaster Paul Krieger presided over his 20th and final opening of a new year Sunday evening, brimming with confidence that an enrollment of 292 boys is ready for the challenges of in-person learning in a worldwide pandemic.

Even under their masks, the faculty and staff were all smiles Tuesday as Christ School welcomed the first group of boys back to campus for the 2020-21 school year.

The early arrivals give the school its largest in-person student presence in six months.

Everett Catts ‘90 is coming up on a big anniversary. In December, the Christ School alumnus will have been a full-time journalist for 25 years. Catts has worked as a writer and editor during that time, winning more than a dozen awards for his sports coverage. He has been News Editor for the Northside/Sandy Springs/Vinings Neighbor newspapers in Atlanta for the past 14 years. Catts began this conversation talking about how his time at Christ School inspired his career path.

The Christ School community is saddened to learn of the passing of J. Hagood Ellison Jr. ’68.

He was 70. Hagood will be sorely missed as he has been a faithful supporter of the school over the years and is a former member of the Board of Trustees and Alumni Council.

From the moment they are born, twin brothers share a countless number of similarities.

Charles Howden ’22 and Frank Howden ’22 have one more thing in common after Monday – they are both Eagle Scouts.

Christ School Board of Trustees Chairman Bert Scott P’08 announced to the school community Thursday morning that Dr. Sean Jenkins will be the school’s next Headmaster, effective in the 2021-2022 school year.

Even though the world around them is much different than any previous summer break, Christ School students continue to step up in their communities. 

Director of Service Learning Olga Mahoney P’20 said that the Greenies’ good deeds have been particularly strong in the Asheville area.  

Miles Bowser ’15 was due to celebrate two milestones this May, his Christ School five-year reunion and his graduation from Tufts University in Massachusetts.

Kristaps Petermanis '00 has been an International Cooperation Specialist with Frontex (an agency of the European Union) since last June.

Christ School seniors will attend 46 different colleges in 20 states, having earned more than $3.5 million in scholarships over a four-year period. The College Guidance Office processed 375 applications, an average of 5.4 per student. The class will attend schools from Harvard and Dartmouth to UNC-Chapel Hill, SMU, and many others.

Christ School’s Class of 2020 does not have a designated spokesperson. However, the opportunity presented itself Thursday and Connor Booher ’20 eloquently demonstrated the character of this year’s seniors.

George Donald ’75 has learned to turn off the part of his brain that controls fear.

The Christ School alumnus turns 63 this month, making him old enough to at least consider retirement. But Donald said he feels a sense of duty instead, working 12-hour shifts as a Senior Staff Interpreter at an Inova Health System hospital in Falls Church, Va.

Stating the obvious, this is an interesting time to work for 3M. The company is constantly in the news for its efforts to ramp up the production of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Christ School alumnus Grant Cleavenger ’05 has been a Senior Mechanical Engineer with 3M’s Scott Fire & Safety division out of Monroe, N.C., since September.
