Bishop Shares Message of 'Holy Love' During Annual Spring Visit

The Rt. Rev. José McLoughlin read the headlines, saw the news footage, and grieved for Buffalo, N.Y., like everyone else.

He was still caught off guard by what happened next.

The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina visits Christ School every spring for Holy Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, and spoke on campus Wednesday.

McLoughlin told the students and faculty that he had just wrapped up a sermon at a local church Sunday when a man with tears in his eyes approached. The man explained that he was just passing through the area and that one of his nieces was a victim in the Buffalo mass shooting.

The Bishop was at a loss for words. But he was taken aback by the man’s "holy love," namely his compassion for the shooter’s upbringing and welfare.

“Biblical love is the most courageous type of love. It is unconditional and meant to be shared,” McLoughlin said. “Be courageous enough to share it with everyone, especially those who appear to be undeserving.”

Four boys chose to take part in Wednesday’s Holy Baptism and Confirmation. In his opening remarks, the Bishop complimented the Greenies and Head of School Dr. Sean Jenkins on a “wonderful, well-done” first year together.

Beyond his duties with the church, the Bishop has been an ardent supporter of Christ School over the years and currently serves on the Board of Trustees.
