Being new to Christ School does not mean that Scott Tumperi comes to us as a novice with independent school education.  

On the contrary, Mr. Tumperi’s first year as part of the Math Department will be his 26th at a high school that offers boarding. In the past, he has taught Chemistry, Engineering, and Physics. 

Scott earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and his master’s in Aerospace Engineering, Math Education, and Data Science, all from the University of Virginia. While at UVa, he found his calling as a teacher while acting as a tutor and academic counselor for the athletic department. Naturally, Scott has tried to attend as many UVa football and basketball games as he can in the past.  

Mr. Tumperi spent a portion of his childhood in Hendersonville, N.C., so he knows the area from past experience. His hobbies include photography and watching college football. He is a Silver Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.  
 

Math Department Chair Ken Tyburski plays disc golf professionally and can often be seen taking advantage of Christ School's 9-hole course to practice his craft. 

In addition to teaching and coaching in the Outdoor Program, Mr. Tyburski's workload for his 10th year including being a house parent in Harris House and doing public-address announcing for athletic games. 

Ken graduated from Georgia Tech in 1999 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering – Cooperative Plan (a designation for undergraduates who worked three semesters in a professional organization while attending school). He has been involved in single-gender education since 2006. 

Mr. Tyburski turned pro in disc golf in August 2014. When he’s not busy directing tournaments, teaching clinics, and volunteering at local events, Mr. Tyburski likes to hike and camp in the Asheville area. 

James Uhler remains a consummate faculty leader, embracing every new challenge in his 25 years at Christ School. 

He stepped up to become the Associate Dean of Academics starting with the 2022-23 school year. 

Mr. Uhler has twice been named the school Teacher of the Year (2004 and 2017) and given invaluable education and encouragement to the youngest Greenies as our Eighth Grade Coordinator. He has also been a History instructor and coached baseball and swimming. 

Mr. Uhler won the P.H. Broyhill Teacher Award in 2013. He was twice selected to the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers list (1998 and 2005). Mr. Uhler has served as a Consultant and Reader for the College Board for the AP U.S. History Exam in the past, chaired the History Department, been a house parent in the dorms, and headed up the summer work crew. He is currently an assistant baseball coach and has coached swimming in the past. 

Mr. Uhler earned a B.A. degree in History from Xavier University as a University Scholar in 1996. He went on to receive a master’s in History from Ohio University five years later. Mr. Uhler and his wife, Becky, live on campus and have two children, Stella and Colin.

Christ School students can count on Tracy Weldon to be a trusted ally in their college search.

The Associate Director of College Guidance and Director of ACT and SAT Testing says she is inspired by college applicants who take the process seriously and aims to help every boy explore all possibilities, whether the universities are domestic or abroad.

Mrs. Weldon grew up on a small farm just outside Asheville. She started at Christ School in 2022, after 10 years of working as a college counselor at international boarding schools in Leysin, Switzerland, Shanghai, China, and Jeju Island, Korea. Besides college counseling, she also has experience working in admissions and alumni affairs at a small private liberal arts college.

Tracy holds a master’s in Higher Education from Harvard University and both a master’s in Creative Writing and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Mrs. Weldon has long admired the mission and beauty of Christ School. Tracy said her first visit to campus was a high school cross country race that she remembers fondly.  

Outside of school, Tracy enjoys traveling, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her husband, Clifford, and their daughter. 

No matter where his travels take him, Matthew Williams remains endlessly fascinated with the subject of Physics and connecting science to real-world applications.  

He became a Christ School faculty member in 2022. Mr. Williams has been the faculty advisor for the Big Brother Program, led multiple international trips, and been an assistant coach in athletics and the Outdoor Program. 

Matthew pursued his B.A. in Physics at Cedarville (Ohio) University, before going on to earn a master’s degree in Science Education from the University of Dayton. He is quite a world traveler, having visited more than 25 countries. Mr. Williams spent five years teaching and coaching at an international school in Singapore. 

He and his wife, Chelsey, live on campus with their children. 

Dr. Josh Witten believes that Science education should fundamentally teach students how we know what we know, equipping them to become the discoverers, inventors, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

He is a product of an all-boys education at St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Witten earned his B.S. in Biology from Duke University and his Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. 

Dr. Witten comes to Christ School after spending more than a decade leading the student research program at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics in Hartsville, S.C. He has always balanced work with community service. Dr. Witten is presently a member of the Darlington County (S.C.) Humane Society Board of Directors and a former member of the Darlington County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. He was a member of Rotary International and the Interact Club sponsor at his former school.  

Dr. Witten has coached cross country, robotics, and rugby. His involvement in rugby as a player or coach spans 30 years and began in high school. 

Dr. Witten lives in Asheville with his wife, Dr. Jennifer Taylor (a fellow Science teacher), and their two daughters, Elizbaeth and Isabel.
