Charles "Chuck" Franklin Cole, grandfather to Billy Newton '08 and George Newton '07 and gracious supporter of Christ School and its mission, passed away on August 16 at the at age of 91.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 5, 2013 in St. Giles Chapel of Deerfield Retirement Center, Asheville. For more information, contact Dan Stevenson 828-684-6232 ext. 184.
In 1974, Chuck and his family moved to Asheville and he fell in love with Western North Carolina. Chuck served as a trustee of Warren Wilson College, worked for the Caring for Children organization, and served the Community Foundation of WNC. Chuck also loved opera and supported the local Lyric Opera of Asheville.
Through mutual friends, Chuck met David Gaines ’84 and became familiar with Christ School. When his grandsons George Newton ’07 and Billy Newton ’08 started searching for boarding schools, he introduced them to Christ School.
Chuck was a generous supporter of Christ School and its mission. He supported the Annual Fund, scholarships, and capital campaigns. Chuck was awarded the Headmaster's Award in 2012, an honor given as a means to express appreciation to individuals who did not attend Christ School yet supported the school.
Chuck is best described by a memory from his grandson Billy Newton '08. The night before Billy's graduation, the seniors gave speeches honoring important people from their time at Christ School. Billy told the story of how his grandfather attended one of his athletic contests and was the only person in the stands that night, holding his umbrella in the rain. Chuck Cole was as faithful and true as a man can get.
