Brooklyn Nets Draft Mason Plumlee '09

On Thursday, June 27, Christ School alumnus Mason Plumlee ’09 was drafted in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets as the No. 22 overall pick.

Plumlee attended the draft in New York last week with his family. He stated that this new opportunity with the Nets is “a dream come true.” Nets General Manager Billy King excitedly reported that as a new addition to the Nets, Mason gives us a better shot.”

Plumlee was able to visit the Nets home arena and met new coach Jason Kidd as well Deron Williams, star point guard, during his trip to Brooklyn. Plumlee is projected to be an ideal complement to Brook Lopez in the center rotation.

At Christ School, Mason Plumlee had a prolific tenure. He was a leader both on and off the court. He was an all-state basketball player winning the state basketball championship three consecutive years. He was a Prefect, a member of the Honor Council, a Wetmore Scholar, and an honor roll student. In his senior year he led the Greenies basketball team with 20 double-doubles.

When asked about his experience at Christ School, Mason explained:

“Christ School created an environment where achieving my personal goals became a collective effort. Goal setting and achievement were not just personal pursuits at CS, but were encouraged and supported by students and faculty alike - all of whom became my best friends.”

Plumlee played basketball for Duke University after graduating Christ School in 2009, where he improved his scoring average every season. He completed his fourth season as a senior at 17.1 ppg and he averaged 9.9 rebounds per game under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Plumlee was named the
2013 Pete Newell Big Man of the Year and he is only the fifth player to earn All-America and Academic All-America in the same season in Duke history.

Plumlee was also a McDonald’s and Jordan Brand All-American selection, a USA Men’s Junior National Select Team member, an NCISAA 3A All-State and CAA All-Conference selection, an All-WNC Basketball Selection, Chick-fil-A Classic All Tournament Team, and a GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Tournament Most Valuable Player.
