Cleared for Takeoff! with Mr. Thornbury

Location: Annex, Room 2.

Description: In this student-led master class, the boys of the Robert Morgan '36 Aviation Program will teach you the procedures for charting and flying an aircraft course for a flight plan using basic math and VFR sectional charts. Following the lesson, the students will demonstrate how to load that course into our advanced Cirrus SR22T flight simulator and give your groups a chance to fly the routes you have planned, as well as try to land the aircraft at your destination airport. Come see if you have what it takes to be a member of the RM'36 Aviation Program!

An Introduction to Mandarin Chinese with Mr. Tang

Location: Annex, Room 3.

Description: In this lesson led by our inspiring Chinese teacher, Mr. Tang, you will focus on how to recognize and verbalize very basic Chinese characters with ease and fun. In addition, you will learn how to paint elegant Chinese calligraphy, a skill that is both practical and creative. Come explore this beautiful language spoken by 1.1 billion people around the world!

The Resource Frontier: Industrial Warfare in Appalachia with Mr. Hicks

Location: Wetmore Hall, Room 22.

Description: In this class, we will explore the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek Strike of 1912-1913, a violent, year-long chapter of the West Virginia Mine Wars and the Appalachian struggle. We will examine how outside investors viewed Appalachia as a "resource frontier,". You will see how the strike escalated into an armed insurrection, featuring the arrival of the "fearless" Mother Jones and the infamous night attack by the machine-gun-equipped "Bull Moose Special" armored train. The session highlights how martial law replaced due process, led to the creation of labor warfare and layered the groundwork for the Battle of Blair Mountain.

Mountain Music: Appalachian Cigar Box Guitars with Professor Cassarino and Mr. Rhinehart

Location: The Music Center & Physics Lab.

Description: This hands-on workshop invites you to build and play your own cigar box guitar while learning about the rich Appalachian history behind these instruments, with special attention on the traditions unique to Western North Carolina. Led by Music Program Director Jim Cassarino and Math & Engineering teacher Sam Rhinehart, in under one hour, you will assemble a fully-functional cigar box guitar from a pre-prepared kit (no drilling or cutting required), string it, tune it, and learn a simple blues riff. After this workshop, you will hold a playable instrument and feel a deeper appreciation for the musical ingenuity of the people of this region.
