From the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools:

The North Carolina General Assembly has joined a growing number of states in requiring schools to provide students with access to suicide prevention and crisis resources. This action reflects increasing concern over youth mental health trends. According to the North Carolina Youth Risk Behavior Survey, approximately 18 to 22 percent of high school students report seriously considering suicide each year, while 7 to 10 percent report having attempted suicide. 

Nationally, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people.
