Athletic Training

Christ School employs two certified, licensed athletic trainers to provide injury care for all athletic practices, home games, and away varsity football games. Our athletic trainers seek to provide excellence in preventative injury care by evaluating and discerning appropriate methods for return to safe athletic performance according to the National Athletic Trainers Association Code of Professional Practice and Ethics.

This may include taping techniques, bracing, prophylactic/protective equipment fitting, padding/or orthotic considerations, injury education, stretching, special exercises, and cooling/heating pre/post-care to reduce potential injury. They will implement therapeutic treatment utilizing modalities and other beneficial methods of pre/post care when indicated to enhance injury recovery.

Limited rehabilitation is available prior to practices/games or provided on the sideline when adequate one-to-one supervision is available. Generally, the student-athlete is educated on proper mechanics to complete their special exercise protocol and is responsible for completing these daily when an athletic trainer is unavailable for direct supervision due to multi-team obligations. Injuries that require more hands on rehabilitation, lengthy one-to-one supervision, or following postoperative protocols are referred to a physical therapist off campus for the duration of recovery.

Collaboration with the Christ School Wellness Center nurses, strength and condition program, coaches, school administrators, physicians, and other healthcare providers ensures a high quality plan of care and facilitates efficient recovery and return to play initiatives.

CONCUSSION CARE

In addition to preventative practices, our athletic training staff provides baseline ImPACT neuro-cognitive testing for all students. This test is current for two years and only used for post-injury testing data comparison should a student-athlete sustain a concussion. Christ School follows the safe return-to-play/return-to-learn guidelines established by the Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act and the state of North Carolina by implementing concussion education, emergency action, and post-concussion care, which encompass our Christ School 4R’s: removal from play, rest, referral to MD, and recovery following a step-wise progression back to athletics.
