Max Collyer ’27 made a beeline for the far corner and nearest camera Tuesday.
The senior defender celebrating his first goal of the season was the moment of a game that otherwise followed a script very similar to 2025.
Same teams. Same score. Same result. A rematch of last year’s NCISAA 4-A state championship game went Christ School’s way again, 2-1, over visiting Covenant Day.
Max redirected a corner kick fed into close quarters by Vytis Rimkus ‘29 in the 14th minute, while Davis Campbell ‘29 and Steven Barlas ‘29 teamed for the second goal. The Lions (5-2-0) cut into the lead and pressed in the final 19 minutes but ultimately could not come up with an equalizer. Their only previous loss had come to traditional NCISAA power High Point Wesleyan Christian Academy in overtime.
For future playoff seeding purposes, Christ School (4-1-1) badly needed Tuesday’s game with another nonconference NCISAA opponent, Metrolina Christian Academy, coming to Arden on Thursday.
Vytis’s assist on Tuesday was the team-high fifth of the season for the sophomore from Lithuania. The score would remain 1-0 until about midway through the second half when Davis created his own chance, dribbling into the box and flicking the ball to Steven, who bumped it off his chest back to Davis. Five goals for the youngest son of Coach Guy Campbell ’00 makes Davis the team leader in scoring.
The only blemish on Christ School’s 20-1-0 record in 2025 came in a penalty shootout loss to Covenant Day, which the Greenies would then go on to avenge in a tight state-championship game played in Matthews, N.C.
