Soccer Wins CAA Showdown

Davis Campbell ’29 had a minute to talk Tuesday as he exited the pitch, but only a minute as the party was waiting back in Christ School’s locker room.

The Greenies chanted and danced heartily on the bottom floor of Memorial Gym – they had every reason to after blanking Rabun Gap (Ga.), 2-0, at home for their most impactful win of the season yet.

Davis curled in a free kick in the 24th minute and set up the second goal, a screamer that Vytis Rimkus ’29 took from point-blank range with 13:40 remaining.

“To be able to help my team win is all I can do,” Davis said.

“We’re starting to trust each other. Player-by-player, we believe we’re the best team and the goals are starting to come.”

Christ School (10-1-1, 4-0) and Rabun Gap (9-2, 2-1) have won the last five state championships in the NCISAA 4-A division, and the Eagles had the better of play early on Tuesday. The visitors nearly got on the board with 21:55 left until halftime with a ball that glanced off the crossbar. The near-miss was the last of their momentum.

The Greenies were the aggressors from that point on, Davis was fouled on the left-edge of the box, which created the chance for his ninth goal of the season. Then in the second half, Vytis gave the team some insurance as he was sprinting down the middle of the penalty area just in time for a feed from Davis. For the season, Vytis ranks third on the team in scoring (six goals).

Even in victory, there will be concern moving forward as starting goalkeeper Max Rodriguez ’29 had to leave the game twice with a shoulder injury. He was in great spirits afterwards, joining in the locker room celebration.

Christ School is back home Friday for a JV-varsity doubleheader against Carmel Christian that kicks off at 4:30 p.m.

JV Greenies 5, Rabun Gap 0

Outscoring opponents, 19-1, will lead to things like a four-game winning streak.

The JV team improved its record to 5-1-1 Tuesday. Asa Miletich ’30 led the way with two goals and two assists. Chase Manganiello ’29 (one goal, one assist), George Prate ‘30 (one goal, one assist), Tristan Riley ’31 (one goal), and Kian Foyle ‘29 (one assist) figured into the scoring as well.
