Possession time does not always equal scoring. Or else Tuesday would have been a very short night for Christ School varsity soccer.
The Greenies stymied Asheville School every time the Blues got a touch. And with bigger games on the horizon, the offense was patient and workmanlike for a 5-1 home win that saw goals from five different players – Davis Campbell ’29, Vytis Rimkus ’29, Lyndon Bryan ’27, Keaton McGee ’30 and Hoge Reynolds ’27.
Three of the goals came off set pieces. Davis buried a free kick from the front edge of the box with 9 minutes and 28 seconds left in the first half.
Hoge was about 10 yards farther back for a missile with 11:27 to go in the game that emptied the Christ School bench with teammates wanting to congratulate the senior who is a locker room favorite and one of this year’s Day Student Proctors. Asheville School (0-2, 0-1) scored in the final 10 minutes off a penalty kick after the Greenies had subbed out starting goalkeeper Max Rodriguez ’29 and many other starters.
Christ School (3-1, 2-0) is the defending Carolinas Athletic Association champion and has now outscored their first two opponents this year, 7-1.
The team travels to undefeated A.C. Reynolds (8-0) for a 6:45 p.m. game on Wednesday night.
