Robotics Team Wins District Competition

Christ School’s fledgling robotics team got a feel for what it would take to compete at the 2023 FIRST North Carolina Mecklenburg County District Event.

A year later, the Greenies won the whole thing.

The boys pooled their technical skills and situational know-how to beat out 29 other teams over the weekend at Palisades High School in Charlotte.

They showed off the championship banner they brought back to campus in Monday’s assembly. Head of School Dr. Sean Jenkins congratulated the group, named “Team 9298 Greeni3s,” and individual praise was given out by team leader Bill Zhou ’24.

Christ School’s team was up against programs with much more history from larger cities such as Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem.

Robotics have been incorporated into Christ School’s Engineering & Technology curriculum for some time now, but this is the only the second year of a school-sponsored team coached by Hamid Najafi and Matthew Houston.

Team 9298 Greeni3s were one of only three second-year teams in the district event. There were five rookie teams and everyone else had three or more years of competition to draw from.

Christ School’s team regularly meets on campus in the Innovation Lab, a classroom/workshop that is the hub for the school’s builders and makers.
