“It’ll never fit, Grandpa.”
Newspapers were very much the source of record for communities back in September 1965, and the Asheville Citizen-Times captured a priceless moment between Greenie Legend Richard “Fessor” Fayssoux ‘1916, P’45, GP’67, and GP’71 and his grandson, Rick ’67.
Fessor is seen trying to squeeze into one of the old leather helmets – the kind he would have worn as the quarterback for Christ School’s first season of organized football in 1915. Fessor’s last football team went 8-0 in 1965, and he would retire from his role as head coach the following summer.

Rick was a standout athlete himself – he lettered in three sports (baseball, wrestling, and football) his junior and senior years.
Notably, he was 16-0 as a wrestler during the winter of 1966-67 and won 27 of his last 29 high school matches. Rick was then named the baseball team MVP after going 8-4 as a pitcher with a no hitter and three one-hitters that spring. Rick has supported the Greenies at past state-championship games and even had chance encounters like his one with Henry Warner ’24 at a Raleigh-area Costco in 2021. He has also been recognized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for his volunteer work in recent years.
