HARRELLS – When does an extra point count for a whole lot more?
Christ School has been handling kicking duties by committee this season, and in one of most key spots imaginable, it was Wes McAven ’27 who came through Friday.
His point-after with 11 seconds to go put the Greenies over the top at Harrells Christian Academy, 42-41, after the fourth touchdown pass of the night from Mak Anderson ’28 – and his second to Jason Dorel Onana ’29 – had tied the game at 41-all.
The Greenies (3-0) showed no ill effects from the first half of a 650-mile round trip to Harrells, which is one county over from the North Carolina coast. In fact, Dre Smith ’27 took the opening kickoff and sprinted 92 yards untouched. It is tied for the third-longest kickoff return in school history.
From there, Mak ran for a 14-yard touchdown at the 3:12 mark of the first quarter and connected on passes with Dre (25 and 37 yards), Jason Dorel (32 and 65 yards) for four more scores. The shorter of the two TD passes to Jason Dorel was perfectly lofted to the sophomore as he streaked wide-open down the Harrells sideline.
The Crusaders (1-1) led 27-14 at halftime but the Christ School defense came out of the break with renewed energy for flying around the football. Notre Dame recruit Sean Kraft ’27 recovered a third-quarter fumble.
The Greenies are back home Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff with Virginia’s North Cross (1-1).
