Henry Nicholls '23

Henry Nicholls ’23 was ready to make his case after a grant-writing workshop at Christ School.

Now, with some help, he’s ready to make some sandwiches.

Henry applied for and won a $250 Hershey Heartwarming Young Heroes Grant for his idea to provide sandwiches to the homeless population of Asheville. The junior is looking to find at least 25 volunteers to form the “Christ School Sandwich Squad” and prepare food for May 1, which is Global Youth Service Day. Greenies are encouraged to reach out to Henry through his school e-mail.

The following is taken directly from Henry’s grant application:

“We will set up a sandwich making crew at our school and work with local Homeward Bound based organization AHOPE in distributing them out to the homeless population of WNC. We will gather students, faculty, and those in our community in completing this task and meet as a group around a weekly basis. While making and distributing the food, we will also be learning and discussing the issues of homelessness, affordable housing, and hunger in our community. We want to educate as well as serve. The funds will be key in getting supplies for the food sustaining and completing our goals. They will go directly into the project, doing everything we can to make the biggest impact with what we get. We want to provide as much as we can for our community and those less fortunate. While we will be looking at getting as many people involved as possible, 25 will be the starting goal. We can make and hand out sandwiches during that weekend. Since our project will repeat frequently, that weekend would fit perfectly into the schedule. It would be a perfect time, from the preparation to the handing out of the food, to the reflections afterwards and talking about what we learned. We want to connect through service as a School, and this offers that opportunity for us."

Director of Service Learning Olga Mahoney P’20 is helping Henry facilitate the project and taught the grant-writing workshop. Both she and Henry are Asheville residents, so the cause is especially personal to them.
