Greenies Kick Off Season Saturday in Georgia

schedule

Christ School varsity football’s schedule for 2023 is highlighted by opponents from four different states and both reigning NCISAA state champions: Charlotte Providence Day (Division I) and Asheville School (Division II).

The Greenies have beaten the Blues 11 consecutive years, a record for either side of the oldest rivalry in the Carolinas. “The Game” is Sept. 30 at Asheville School and coincides with Christ School’s Alumni Weekend, which is moving to the fall.

Third-year coach Chad Walker saw encouraging signs and room for improvement in last Saturday’s only preseason scrimmage for the Greenies – a 14-0 loss to Greenville High (S.C.).

The Red Raiders, who were 10-4 and a state runner-up last year, took advantage of a couple breakdowns in Saturday’s game at Furman University. On the flip side, Christ School’s defense caused two turnovers – a fumble recovery by Alabama recruit Cayden Jones ’24 and an interception by Jakob Iwanek ’24. A promising first-half drive deep into Greenville territory was foiled by penalties.

“I think we have the making of a really good team,” Coach Walker said.

“We’re excited with where our team is. (Saturday) was about having fun and competing. Seeing some guys in some different positions, getting some reserve guys some reps and seeing where they’re at. We’re excited and looking forward to getting the season started.”

First up is Saturday’s 4 p.m. game vs. Lowndes (Ga.), part of the Georgia-Carolina Challenge in Moultrie, Ga.
