Greenies at Home for Huge TV Game

Line

Senior Night carries with it a lot of emotion.

Multiply that exponentially for the Christ School varsity football team with Charlotte Christian coming to campus for a televised game. All of Friday’s action from Fayssoux Field will be broadcast on WMYA (40) when the Greenies (4-1) and Knights (3-2) meet in a rematch of last year’s NCISAA Division I state-championship game (won by Charlotte Christian, 43-14).

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Friday is a must-win for both sides if they want to remain in contention for a high seed and homefield advantage in the NCISAA Division I playoffs.

Christ School recovered nicely from its first loss (25-7 at Charlotte Latin on Sept. 27) with last Friday’s 14-13 win at Charlotte Providence Day. Navy Shuler ’20 (1,028 yards and eight touchdowns with four interceptions) found Cade Mintz ’21 (19 receptions for 318 yards and one touchdown) for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter. The Greenies were held scoreless in the first half but got a serious boost when Aydan White ’20 (13 receptions for 281 yards and six touchdowns) returned the opening kickoff of the second half 92 yards for a touchdown. Both successful extra-point kicks by Henry Duggins '20 proved to be important.

Lex Long ’21 (10 receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns), Wilson Handy ’21 (eight receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown), Painter Richards-Baker ’21 (seven receptions for 82 yards), and Charlie Browder ’21 (five receptions for 53 yards) have also been key receivers for Christ School, while Pierce Hammonds ’22 (420 yards, five touchdowns) has powered the rushing attack.

The Christ School defense is only allowing 13.0 points per game, thanks to the tackling of Read Sunn ’20 (79 tackles), Jasper Thomas ’20 (74), and Kiki Alcime ’20 (38).

Charlotte Christian is coming off a 28-20 win over Trinity Christian. Henry Rutledge ’21 (308 yards, three touchdowns) rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns last week. The Knights have used three different quarterbacks due to injury issues, with Brett Adams ’20 (436 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions) emerging as the latest starter. The favorite receivers for whomever is playing quarterback are Logan Jones ’20 (16 receptions for 158 yards and three touchdowns) and Jeberechiah Awolowo ’20 (12 receptions for 320 yards and four touchdowns). Defensive leaders for Charlotte Christian are Caleb Stephens ‘20 (52 tackles), Greyson Cadd ’20 (50), and Jimmy Bailey ’21 (32).
