Greenie Legend Gaines Gives Asheville School Week Speech

David Gaines ’84, P’26 jokes that everyone in a 1982 picture is holding up one finger because it was the only win of the year for the Christ School football team.

It’s not far from the truth.

With David at quarterback, the Greenies (1-8) salvaged an otherwise dreadful season with a 27-13 win at Asheville School.

The current group of coaches and players have a similar chance to shape their own narrative, he told them Tuesday in Chapel. David even slipped on his old high school jersey as he spoke to the boys.

David is in the Athletic Hall of Fame as not only one of the greatest athletes in school history, but also one of the most successful coaches. Under his watch, the Greenies won nine state championships in basketball and golf.

Saturday’s game will be the 97th meeting between Christ School and Asheville School. The Blues lead the all-time series, 50-42-4, but the Greenies have won 19 of the 23 meetings in the 2000s. Their current winning streak of 11 consecutive years is the longest for either side since the rivalry started in 1911.
