Normalizing a game like next Saturday keeps the focus on football, where it should be for every Christ School player and coach.
Still, there is an acknowledgement by one of the linebackers having the biggest impact on the defense that the 100th playing of “The Game” will be different for everything off the field.
“A lot of alumni are coming and that’s huge. We all have to perform for them,” Jonas Kalverda ’28 said.
“It is just a normal week, to be honest. It’s just football. But we know it’ll be a busy game, and so we just have to keep moving – keep practicing hard, lifting hard, and playing hard.”
The Greenies (5-0) definitely gave it their all in Friday’s final step before Asheville School. They led Charlotte Latin by as many as 24 points, still needing a 94-yard drive in the fourth quarter to finally break the visiting Hawks’ spirit fully, 40-22.
Mak Anderson ’28 went over 1,000 yards passing for the season with four touchdown throws to Jason Dorel Onana ‘29 (70 and 85 yards), Brayden Crain ‘28 (15 yards), and Dre Smith ’27 (36 yards). Raphael Marchand ‘28 completed the scoring with a 17-yard run at the 1:51 mark of the fourth quarter. Christ School got a safety on special teams and a 24-yard field goal off the right foot of Wes McAven ‘27.
Give the Hawks (2-3) credit, they had cut the lead to 33-22 when the Greenies took possession at their 6-yard line with 8:58 to go in the game. Christ School not only battered Charlotte Latin with the rushing of Raphael and Matt Delpeche ‘29, but Mak made a couple key throws on third down to keep the chains moving. Second only in importance to the points was burning 7 minutes, 7 seconds off the clock.
“It really showed our commitment not to stop,” lineman Scotty Hicks '29 said.
“One thing I like about this team is we won’t quit when faced with some adversity. We’re feeling good, the line as a whole is doing well.”
Lightning delayed the start of Friday’s kickoff by more than 30 minutes. Christ School's win avenged a 35-12 loss at Charlotte Latin in 2025.
