Football Overcomes Miscues for Third Win

Christ School varsity football found its margin for error Friday night, then seemed determined to stretch it.

The Greenies did more than enough self-inflicted harm with costly penalties, including three flags that called back touchdowns. They spotted a young Concord Christian team a 14-0 lead. In the end, the result was all that mattered after taking more than three hours to claw out a 46-24 home win.

Jackson Cancel ’26 scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), Dre Smith ‘27 caught both of the TDs thrown by Jackson Tolbert ‘27, and Issac Schulz ‘26 turned a fumble recovery into six points. It wasn’t until 1:19 remaining in the game that Christ School (3-1) was able to finally relax. Brayden Smith ‘27 broke a 27-yard touchdown run on fourth down after the Lions (2-2) had closed the gap to one score, 32-24.

Hudson Pressley '28 also had a touchdown pass. Jay Klaff ‘27 made an interception on defense.

The Greenies led 25-14 at the half and Isaac’s unconventional touchdown at the 8:55 mark of the third quarter – a Concord Christian player had made an interception near the goal line before coughing the ball up – was part of 32 unanswered points.

Christ School is on the road the next two weeks – Friday at Charlotte Latin and then Sept. 27 at Asheville School.
