Fitzgerald, Myers Lead Greenies to Stirring First Win

Donavon Fitzgerald '22 led Christ School with 25 points on Saturday.

Basketball games in the Greenie Dome are eerily quiet this season due to COVID-19 restrictions on attendance.

What little fan support Christ School was allowed to have Saturday was just as loud and proud as the players after the buzzer sounded on a 65-64 home win over Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic.

Donavon Fitzgerald ’22 poured in a team-high 25 points and Zack Myers ’24 added 14 for the Greenies (1-4), who led the Fighting Irish (6-2) by double digits in the second half, but also began the game in a 9-0 hole.

Others scorers for Christ School were Gabe Berardi ’22 (seven points), Drew Redmond ’21 (six), Riggs Handy ’23 (six), Quinton Cancel ’23 (five), and Ty Besses ’22 (two).

The game was tied at 64-all with 7.8 seconds to go in regulation when Gabe took a charge. On the ensuing possession, Zack was able to draw a foul and make one of two free throws. The Greenies overcame six turnovers in the fourth quarter.

“Those guys at the end just willed it to happen,” Christ School coach Matt Cioce ‘13 said.

“It wasn’t perfect, but we played through some things and the ball bounced our way, which isn’t always going to happen. Now we need to build off of this. The more games, the more practices this group gets together, the better their chemistry is going to be and hopefully we can make a deep run in February.”

Christ School’s next game is Monday versus Charlotte Latin with a tip-off time of noon. The game will be hosted by Metrolina Christian in Indian Trail, N.C.
