CHARLOTTE – Find someone who had the foresight to see Dawson Thompson ’25 becoming a state-championship thrower back in 2019. They’d be lying.
The once diminutive Cuningham House resident is now a brawny Columbia University football recruit, a growth that parallels his development in the classroom and the dorms. Saturday was Dawson’s crowning achievement as a Greenie, winning the discus at the NCISAA Division I state track meet (151 feet, 7 inches), held on the campus of Charlotte Country Day.
Dawson was voted the team MVP by Greenie coaches this season. He was also an all-conference lineman for the Christ School football team at 6-foot-6, 261 pounds.
The Greenies (68 points) placed fourth in this weekend's team standings with other individual highlights including Eshoi Ewers ‘26 medaling in the triple jump (second place, 43 feet) and long jump (third place, 21-5) and a pair of third-place finishes in distance races from Dallas Reeves ‘27 (1,600-meter run, 4:16.75) and Brooks Barbee ‘27 (3,200-meter run, 9:21.30). The 800-meter relay also came in third place (1:29.46), with the team consisting of Eshoi, Jaxon Grieves ‘27, Myles Murphy ‘27, and Chyance King ‘28.
