Every senior who slipped into a green blazer for the first time Wednesday felt something different.
Therein lies the magic of one of Christ School’s most sacred symbols.
Head of School Dr. Sean Jenkins presented 76 blazers to the Class of 2024 during a special ceremony held inside St. Joseph’s Chapel.
Director of Communications Graylyn Loomis ’10 has his own green blazer hanging in his closet. He spoke just prior to the jackets being given out by Dr. Jenkins.
“The blazer signifies a senior. It denotes knowledge, experience, responsibility. In some ways, it signals that you have reached a milestone. And in other ways, it marks that your journey has just begun,” Mr. Loomis said.
“For some of you, it’s been a great challenge to reach this point, for others the challenge is still to come. Find your own significance in the green blazer and embrace that feeling. Use it as fuel this year and a physical reminder to seek the responsibility that leads to true meaning. There will be other metaphorical green blazers in your life and the green blazers that taste the sweetest will take the most work and demand the biggest price. Savor this moment today and use it as inspiration to go further than ever.”
Director of Spiritual Life Peter Hartwig offered this blessing to the green blazers after Mr. Loomis left the pulpit.
“Lord God, we ask your blessing on these blazers. That those who wear them would be educated men of good character prepared for academic success in college and productive citizenship in adult society. We ask that whenever they put them on, they would be reminded to uphold their lives with leadership, the pursuit of true knowledge, the love of faith, and the respect for all work. We ask all of this in your own name, Amen.”
