Student Essay Wins Trip for Christ School Family

"Thank a Favorite Teacher" written by Joe deLoach '18

Engineering instructor Marcel Duhaime and his family did not have any special plans for Winter Break.

They do now, and they're bringing a few friends.

Mermaid Cottages out of Tybee Island, Georgia, ran a "Thank a Favorite Teacher" promotion which encouraged students to write short essays.

A submission from Joe deLoach '18 was chosen as one of the winners which means a complimentary four-day, three-night stay for the Duhaime family – Marcel, his wife, Learning Resources teacher Beth Duhaime, and son, Sawyer '18. Joe is coming as well, along with invited guests Paul Gao '18 and Dining Hall employee Anola Alabdo.

Winter Break for Christ School begins Friday at noon.

"To me, this just reinforces the beauty of living in this community," Marcel said. "Joe and I were talking about winter one day and the doldrums that come with it. Joe knew this would be a nice, small thing he could do. Now we want to get everyone together and do something fun."

Joe is currently a student in Marcel Duhaime's AP Computer Science Principles and Honors Principles of Engineering classes. To win the trip to Tybee Island, which is near Savannah, Ga., Joe wrote the following: "His classes are different, interesting, and informative. He gets us started and then gives a lot of time and space to learn on our own. We get to go deeper in those concepts that interest us. Not many teachers give us that kind of latitude to pursue our passions."

The Duhaimes previously stayed in the Mermaid Cottages last summer. This is the family's third year at Christ School.
