Faculty Celebrated in Year's Final Assembly

History instructor Olga Mahoney named Teacher of the Year

Kool & The Gang's 1980 hit song "Celebration" was playing over the speakers Friday morning in Pingree Auditorium. And that was very much the mood throughout the final Assembly of the 2017-18 school year.

Olga Mahoney was announced as Christ School's Teacher of the Year, an award voted on by the student body. She will give an address during Sunday's 118th Commencement along with Faris Serafim '18, who was also chosen by his fellow Greenies.

Mahoney is about to complete her ninth year at Christ School. She is a History instructor and heads up the Service Learning Program. "I feel so honored and humbled to work with such a fantastic faculty," Mahoney said. "I am grateful for all the students here, especially the Class of 2018, who I cannot wait to address."

Retiring teachers Marshall Baltazar (World Languages) and Sandy Powers (Math), who have both been at Christ School since 2010, were given special recognition by Assistant Headmaster Jeff Miles on Friday. Headmaster Paul Krieger announced that seven staff members have reached milestones for service – 5, 10, or 15 years. Those individuals are Duncan Parham (15 years), Jennifer Bird (15 years), Doug Embler (10 years), Travis Harris (10 years), Shao Ting Chung (5 years), Ron Ramsey (5 years), and David Williams (5 years). Each of those men and women received a gift from the school.

Sunday's Commencement for Christ School's 64 seniors is from 10:15 to 11 a.m. in Yard A. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved inside Mebane Field House.
