LEWISVILLE – Advances in nutrition and technology will keep pushing athletic performance to new levels.
Kingston Whitty ’26 draws from something uniquely special inside him, too, which is why a 36-year-old school and state record was finally on borrowed time Saturday. Kingston curled his body over the crossbar for an awe-inspiring win in the high jump (7 feet, 2 inches), a performance on its own that would have made the two-hour trip to Forsyth Country Day worthwhile for Christ School track and field.
As a team, the Greenies came through incrementally in most of the 18 events to win their sixth state championship (1977, 1990, 2018, 2019, 2024, and 2026) and fourth in eight years. The margin of victory (29 points) in the NCISAA Division I meet over second-place Cary Academy and Charlotte Christian was more than double that of Christ School’s last win in 2024.
Kingston was a high jump champion in his home state of Georgia prior to coming to Christ School this year. Now he holds the NCISAA all-classifications record and the Western North Carolina record, private or public schools. The previous school record for the high jump (6-9) was shared by Mike Hill '90 and Miles Plumlee '08. Miles went on to play college basketball for Duke University and Kingston has a similar future track as he has signed to be a part of N.C. State’s backcourt.
Head coach Randy Ashley, now in his 11th year with the program, pointed to not only Kingston, but several more two-way athletes and members of the basketball program for their scoring. Tyler Jones ’26, Trevor Manhertz ’26, and Dacen Petty ’26 helped Christ School get 20 points in the high jump when 10 had been the expectation. Junior Koen Booker ’27 won the long jump (21-5.5) on Friday despite coming into the meet ranked ninth. And not to be outdone, William Robinson ’26 produced points in the throws by placing third in the shot put (51-3) and fifth in the discus (141-7).
Elsewhere in the field events, Myles Murphy ’27 came in fourth place in the triple jump (42-7), the same position as Alex Jarrett ’26 in the pole vault (11-6).
Lyndon Bryan ’27 placed in the 110 hurdles (seventh, 17.52) and 300 hurdles (fourth, 41.35) and the highlight of the relays were second-place showings by the 800-meter relay (Koen, Myles, Tyler, and Spencer Thompson ’26 in 1:28.52) and the 3,200-meter relay (Noah Clancy ’26, Dominic Rose ’28, Brody Webb ’27, and Dallas Reeves ’27), which ran a school record of 7:46.47.
Christ School’s distance corps are as deep as ever and the Greenies needed every bit of that depth, led by Brooks Barbee ’27, Brody, Dallas, Noah, Reynolds, Carl Baird ’27, Ben Graham ’27, and Timmy McDowell ’27, who all ran personal records in the 800, 1,600, or 3,200 meters.
