CHARLOTTE - Everything looked like it was not meant to be Thursday night.

Until it was.

Christ School varsity soccer fell behind 2-0 at Charlotte Providence Day, a team that had gotten the better of the Greenies when they met in the regular season (a 3-1 win for the Chargers on Sept. 28).

The Greenies (10-10-1) not only fought back to equalize in the final 21 minutes of regulation but saved something for overtime. A long throw-in by Dominic Rose ‘28 was bounced around, saved initially by the Providence Day keeper, and finally corralled by Bradley Campbell ‘24, who scored with five seconds to go in the second overtime period.

Christ School has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCISAA state playoffs for the first time since 2017 with Thursday’s 3-2 win.

“If you look at our record this year, you don’t necessarily see a whole lot of wins, but you see a lot of games like what happened (Thursday),” Greenies coach Guy Campbell ’00 said.

“The ball wouldn’t bounce our way in the regular season and we just kept telling the boys that these are learning moments and you’ve got to trust the process and trust each other. They never gave up and it came to fruition on the road in the playoffs. We think the boys are really starting to believe in themselves and we’re very much looking forward to another opportunity to play.”

Saturday’s third-round trip in 4-A will be a long one – the boys are on the road for a 2 p.m. game at second-seeded Durham Academy (13-3-1).

Thursday’s goals in regulation were scored by Wells Edwards ’25 and Ethan Rose ’24, assisted by Brendan Regan ’24 and Truett Compton ’25. Felix Huebner ’26 made six saves.
