Lacrosse Advances to State Semifinals

The right kind of déjà vu.

Parker Abernethy ‘28 and Christ School put an end to Cannon School’s reign over NCISAA Division I lacrosse on Friday.

The Cougars will not be state champions for the fourth year in a row, not after losing to the Greenies by the same exact score as their March 4 meeting in the regular season, 7-6.

Parker, a freshman from Denver, N.C., had the biggest hat trick (three goals) of his career. Nate Wilberding ’25 and Palo Miles ‘27 added two goals of their own. Nate scooped a groundball with just over 2 minutes to go in regulation, stumbled, but kept possession. He then flipped a pass to Caden Paradine ’25, who found Palo just outside the crease with 2:10 remaining for the winning goal.

Third-seeded Christ School (12-5) keeps its season alive and travels to No. 2 Charlotte Country Day (18-6) for Wednesday’s state semifinals. Game time is 5 p.m. The winner will play either No. 4 Rabun Gap (9-6) or top-seeded Durham Academy (15-2) next Saturday for the NCISAA Division I championship.

The Greenies have a lot to atone for Tuesday – they lost 8-4 to Charlotte Country Day on March 26 in Arden.
