Kingston Whitty ’26 sees a different kind of court in his future. When basketball ends one day, he wants to focus all his energy on law school.
Sunday was a pretty good closing argument in one sense – Kingston led all Greenie scorers with 15 points in the final home game of his high school career, a 61-49 loss to the nation’s top-ranked team, Montverde Academy (Fla.).
“It was a fun transition coming here (to Christ School) this year, bonding as a team and making a lot of good memories,” Kingston said.
“Seeing the highest level of competition in the (the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) Scholastic conference) and seeing where I fit in was nice. I felt very comfortable.”
Back-to-back losses to New Hampshire’s Brewster Academy (61-42 on Friday) and Montverde in the Christ School Classic were the very last Greenie Dome games for Kingston and five other seniors – Jeremy Horton ’26, Tyler Jones ’26, Trevor Manhertz ’26, Dacen Petty ’26 and William Robinson ’26.
Christ School had won 35 consecutive games at home – a streak that dated back to the 2023-24 season – prior to hosting its first-ever Nike EYBL event.
There are no moral victories with a streak and tradition like that. But Montverde is the No. 1 team in Week 13 of the ESPN SC Next Top 25 national rankings and trailed the Greenies (21-12) by a 17-12 score after the first quarter Sunday. Christ School never recovered from a backbreaking 21-2 scoring run by the Eagles (20-5) to end the first half. Even so, the Greenies showed some fight until the end. Kingston’s final 3-pointer of the afternoon made the score, 58-49, with 2:21 to play.
“I think it was an unbelievable experience for the team, the program, and our community,” Christ School coach Erasto Hatchett said.
“We competed well, I think the guys tried their best. We do belong, the boys really do believe that, this first year in the EYBL was just an adjustment for them and knowing that you have to be ready to play every day. I think they learned from that, we’ll take that growth moving forward, and I believe we’ll be even better prepared for next year.”
The rest of Sunday’s scorers were: Micah Goodlow ’28 (12 points), Trevor (eight), Hudson Hatch ’28 (six), Dylan Twitty ’27 (four), Jeremy (two), and Koen Booker ’27 (two). Koen led the team with seven rebounds and Kingston gave out the most assists (five).
