Greenies Run for Conference Title at Home

There is no better place than home for Christ School cross country to add to what has already been a historic season.

The Greenies are not only the host, but the favorite to win Wednesday’s Carolinas Athletic Association meet. The boys race begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls.

Both races start and finish on Fayssoux Field, and that is where the Greenies hope to celebrate their first conference championship in the sport since 2001. They have already won the Buncombe County meet, which was unprecedented for the program. Individually, Andrew Hammel ’20 (15:31.80) and Joseph Visconti ’20 (15:39.80) are the two fastest distance runners that Christ School has ever produced, based off their performances at the Great American Cross Country Festival on October 5 in Cary, N.C.

No. 3 runner Rocky Hammel ‘23 shaved 21 seconds off his personal record to finish in 16:19.00 at the Great American meet. Jack Cross ’22 (18:54.80), Carson Guzzo ’22 (19:20.70) and Miles Gardner ’20 (19:32.00) also returned home with season-best times from Cary.

Eighth-grader Dawson Reeves ’24 has been consistently the fourth scoring runner for Christ School. His season-best time of 16:50.00 came at the Hare and Hounds Invitational on September 21 in Charlotte. The same race was the fastest one for Ethan Kemp ‘21 (18:13.60), Tommy Schleusner ’20 (18:25.70), and Jack Fitch ‘20 (18:58.70).

Despite Andrew and Joseph coming in first and second place, respectively, in last year’s CAA meet, the Greenies placed fourth in the team standings with 89 points behind Asheville Christian Academy (45), Asheville School (50), and Carolina Day (59). Carolina Day is the defending girls team champion.

There is no admission charge for spectators who attend Wednesday’s CAA meet. Awards will be given out shortly after completion of the girls race.
