Early Fireworks Allow Varsity Football to Prevail on Senior Night

Shoestring tackles would have brought down a lesser player.

N.C. State recruit Zack Myers ’23 kept his feet Friday, despite the best efforts of several Charlotte Country Day defenders. If there was one play indicative of the evening, it was Christ School’s first touchdown.

The Greenies may have teetered a little at times, but they ultimately held on for a 24-13 Senior Night win.

Christ School (4-4, 1-2) did all its scoring in the first half.

Tray Mauney ’23 passed for a game-high 256 yards and found Zack for a pair of touchdowns (51 and 82 yards), with a third TD going to Khalil Conley ’24 (62 yards). Matthew Hammel ’23 connected on all three of his extra-point attempts and a 27-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

Jakob Iwanek ’24 was arguably the game’s most valuable player – the junior from Arden snagged two interceptions for the defense. On special teams, he blocked a 30-yard field goal to thwart the Buccaneers’ final shot at a comeback.

Quinton Cancel ’23 recovered a fumble on a muffed punt return.

Each of Christ School’s 11 seniors were introduced to the Fayssoux Field crowd in a pregame ceremony. The seniors are Tray, Zack, Matthew, Quinton, Tidiane Gakou ’23, JoVaughn Hudson ’23, Dylan Lindsey ’23, Matthew Pethel ’23, Jack Shimer ’23, Seth Shuler ’23, and Tom Tang ’23.

The Greenies are back on the road next week at Charlotte Christian, which knocked off previously-undefeated Charlotte Providence Day, 38-37, in another Big South Conference game on Friday.
