Cold the Only Obstacle for Soccer in Playoff Opener

Anything can happen in playoff soccer.

Christ School is thankful that the weather was the only unfavorable and unpredictable element to Tuesday’s opening round.

Truett Compton ’25 achieved his first hat trick of the season and Jaron Richardson ’23 scored twice in what was in all likelihood his final home game as a Greenie – an 8-2 rout of Metrolina Christian Academy that wasn’t as close as the final score.

Christ School (11-9) led 6-0 at halftime and pulled its starters for chunks of the first and second half. Not only was it advantageous to be on the field for playing time Tuesday, but simply to stay warm.

The temperature was in the 30s for the entirety of the NCISAA 4-A playoff game, with Greenie players wearing parkas, toboggans, and gloves on the sidelines. Both teams went to their locker rooms at halftime seeking heated conditions.

Jackson Knoll ’23, Jonathan Chen ’23, and Bradley Campbell ’24 added one goal apiece. Jaron, Truett, Brendan Regan ’24, Luke Garner ’24, and Wells Edwards ’25 were credited with assists. Collier Lilly ’25 (four saves) and starter Ben Yang ’24 (three saves) shared time at goalkeeper.

The Greenies move on to play at Covenant Day (8-7-1) in Thursday’s second round. Game time is 5:30 p.m. Covenant Day won, 2-1, when the two teams met in an Aug. 26 regular-season game in Arden.
