'Christmas in the Greenie Dome' Sees a Clean Sweep for Varsity, JV

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night” is not only a line in a popular holiday poem, but the best description of Christ School’s offensive efficiency Monday night.

Varsity basketball scored 100 points in a game for the first time in four years. Every Greenie who dressed out contributed points of some kind to a 103-80 romp over Rabun Gap (Ga.). De’Ante Green ’22 poured in a game-high 30 points and was joined in double figures by Charlie Browder ’21 (15 points), Justice Ajogbor ’20 (13), and Luke Stone ’21 (12).

Since it was “Christmas in the Greenie Dome,” also known as the annual “Silent Night” game, the crowd inside Mebane Field House was especially large and festive.

Protocol for the Silent Night game calls for silence from the home crowd until Christ School (6-8) scores its 10th point. Then everyone is allowed to go crazy. Fans did not have to wait long for that moment, with the Greenies taking a 9-0 lead right out of the gate. They increased that advantage to 25-10 after the first quarter, 53-30 at halftime, and 76-52, at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Michael Mahoney ’20, who was recently accepted into Harvard, made a layup in transition for the 100th point with 1:35 remaining. Starting next fall, he will be college classmates with Justice, who is the highest-rated basketball recruit in the Crimson’s history. Michael finished with four points and the rest of the Greenies’ scorers were Zack Myers ’23 (six points), Drew Redmond ’21 (five), Ty Besses ’22 (five), Jack Britts ’22 (four), Ray Faison ’20 (three), Jack Knott ’20 (three), and Adam Keever ’20 (three).

Prior to Monday’s outburst, Christ School’s last 100-point game had occurred December 11, 2015 (a 100-87 win over Carolina Day). The team’s previous high for this season was 81 points.

Christ School JV basketball perfectly set the stage for Monday’s big night for the varsity with its second win of the season.

Mitchell Donahoo ’21 (13 points) and Grant Haldeman ’21 (12) combined for 25 points and the Greenies (2-5) got seven each from Cade Corbett ’23 and Jackson Fender ’21. Christ School led wire-to-wire and was able to hold on as the score tightened in the fourth quarter.

Other scorers for the Greenies were Cayden Jones ’23 (four points), Tony Murphy ’23 (two), Will Purvis ’22 (two), Tyler Bell ’21 (two), and Ben Wiznitzer ’22 (one).
