Big Plays Save Greenies From Upset Loss

Christ School coach Nick Luhm’s worst fears were realized when a string of lackluster practices carried over into Friday’s football game at Metrolina Christian.

To their credit, the Greenies made enough big plays to make up for three touchdowns negated by penalties and other miscues in a 28-21 road win.

The offense struggled all night to mount drives, but A.J. Simpkins ’22 went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season with a 78-yard touchdown pass to Cade Mintz ’21 at the 4:56 mark of the third quarter. An earlier touchdown catch of a similar distance by Cade was waived off for a flag.

Bryce Sain ’22 broke a 28-yard touchdown run with 9:37 to go in the game which proved to be the winning score.

Christ School (2-2) built a 14-0 lead off two improbable, but wildly-impressive plays on defense and special teams.

Zack Myers ’24 jumped a Metrolina receiver’s route for a 99-yard interception return in the second quarter. And in the third, Dartmouth recruit Painter Richards-Baker ’21 instinctually picked up an onside kick that had yet to roll the necessary 10 yards and took it to the house.

The Greenies have not played a home game since Sept. 25, but that is all about to change. Next Saturday is not only Halloween, but the 94th edition of “The Game.” Christ School will look to extend its series record eight-game winning streak and keep the Fayssoux-Arbogast Trophy when it hosts Asheville School at 1:30 p.m.
