ASHEVILLE – A modern-day dynasty too great to deny.
Months later, Christ School basketball’s third consecutive state championship season and ninth overall since 2005 is still being rewarded.
The Greenies won in both categories they were nominated for at Sunday night’s 63rd annual Western North Carolina Sports Banquet. Each year, the banquet at the Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa is put on by the Mountain Amateur Athletics Club, which decides the winners among Asheville area private and public high schools.
The Fields Auto Group Division II Male Team Major Sport award went to the team itself – the Greenies were 28-3 and No. 20 in the season’s final national rankings from MaxPreps. Christ School impressively won every state playoff game by double digits, enroute to a 73-50 win over Carmel Christian in the Feb. 22 NCISAA 4-A championship game. The Greenies were even more dominant in the Carolinas Athletic Association, winning conference games by an average of 27.0 points. And with one of the best homecourt advantages in the state, they were undefeated (11-0) in Arden. Finally, the team went 2-1 in March’s Nike Postseason Invitational Tournament, held over three days in North Augusta, S.C.
N.C. State recruit Mikey Wilkins ’25 was the catalyst again this season and won the Prescription Pad Pharmacies Division II Male Athlete Major Sport award on Sunday.
Mikey was previously named the Mr. Basketball State Player of the Year award by The Charlotte Observer, the first Christ School player to win this award since NBA veteran Mason Plumlee ’09. He was the CAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and part of the NCISAA 4-A all-state team.
The 6-foot-9 senior from Rutherfordton led the Greenies in scoring (15.6 ppg.), rebounding (8.0 rpg.), and blocks (1.0 bpg.). He amassed more than 2,000 career points in high school.
