High scorers aim for next level of testing

Chances are slim, but it is best to not lecture a Christ School Mathlete on percentages.

Seven boys were part of the American Mathematics Competitions 10/12 testing Thursday in Pingree Auditorium. With pencils in hand and calculators strictly forbidden, the Greenies dove into a 75-minute, 25-question multiple choice test.

Their goal?

Nationwide, less than 5 percent of students score high enough on the AMC 10/12 to then take the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination). That exam is all that's left between qualifying for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad. Jerry Lu '15 was the last Christ School student to reach the AIME level.

Mathletes who took the AMC 10/12 test on Thursday were Bennett David '18, William David '21, Jacob Dowler '19, Drew Hamilton '18, Michael Mahoney '20, Michael Wang '19, and Hance Zhang '19.

The test was administered by Math Department chair Bryan Martin, who explained everything to the boys beforehand. "It is not advantageous to guess," Martin warned them, and he was right. Correct answers were worth six points, there were 1.5 points awarded for blank responses, and no points at all for wrong answers.

It will take approximately three weeks before the Greenies get their scores back.
