Field Games Kick Off Dorm Wars

Field Games Kick Off Dorm Wars

Year-round competition is under way

Teamwork was the overriding theme of Wednesday night's Field Games. Christ School boys learned to work together with classmates who may have been strangers just days before, whether it was the wheelbarrow race, egg toss, water balloon toss, relay race, or tug-of-war.

Math Instructor Mike Mohney just began his fifth year as head of Cuningham House, and he knows as well as anyone that Field Games sets the tone for Dorm Wars, an annual, points-based competition between Christ School's residence halls. Day students, who are assigned a residence hall each year, participate in Dorm Wars as well. Mohney feels that Dorm Wars is just one of many examples that set Christ School apart. "Field Games is such a fun night for the boys," Mohney said. "And as a whole, I think Dorm Wars is a positive thing. They play a significant role in the Christ School community and experience."

Field Games is the first event in Dorm Wars, with others being sprinkled throughout the school year. Points are earned by the house winners of games such as dodgeball, flag football, soccer and basketball. The boys have a chance to broaden their horizons in non-athletic events as well, including a talent night. The house with the best Christmas lights display wins an event in December.

Asheville School Week is a big part of Dorm Wars, containing about four to five events in rapid succession. Everything leads up to a year-end on campus regatta, in which the boys construct their own boat.
