Drake Oliver '19 Chases Musical Dream

Singing at the top of his lungs is the only way Drake Oliver '19 knows how.

"I've always been loud since I was born. I just love to sing," he said with a laugh.

The senior's voice is taking him places. A talent agent from Florida saw some of Drake's solo performances with the Christ School choir on YouTube. That connection has led to Friday's audition for a Capitol Records representative in Orlando.

There will be no backing track, lyric sheets, or studio musicians. Drake will sing a pair of country songs, A cappella and from memory – "Wagon Wheel" and "Yours."

"I'm very excited and a little nervous," Drake said. "Most of all, I'm excited for the challenge and to see where this takes me. Since I'm a senior, I'm applying to Belmont (a university in Nashville). It's one of the top music schools in the country. I want to pursue this the right way and jump head-first into it."

Drake is from Sunset, S.C. He first got serious about music in elementary school and has traveled to Florida in the past for vocal lessons. Drake has been involved with the choir for four out of his five years at Christ School.

While his musical interests vary, Drake said he identifies most with jazz and vocalists such as Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble.
