Greenies Adopt Local Families for Christmas

'Tis the season for giving at Christ School.

Keeping with a decades-old tradition, the school is part of this year's Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry's Christmas Angel Program. Six local families in need will get to experience the joys of the holiday season thanks to donations raised by each of Christ School's dorms.

Coordinator of Student Outreach Travis Harris began collecting money Tuesday night and the drive will extend through December 14. Harris is hopeful that the Greenies can equal or surpass last year when Christ School raised close to $400 for each family.

"We just want to make sure the kids have a Christmas and these families get the same opportunities as everyone else," Harris said. "When people ask me what I want for Christmas, I have to admit I'm kind of a Scrooge. I don't really want anything. But giving something to someone else, people who are less fortunate, is really a great experience for everyone here at Christ School."

In the past, the Greenies have used the money to purchase not only toys for the children, but winter-weather essentials such as warm jackets, socks, and toiletries. Christ School drops off the donations at ABCCM just before Christmas Break. This year's delivery will occur on December 17 and be a little different. Harris said that Greenies in the Big Brother Program will be selected to buy the gifts.

Boys may bill home their donations to the Christmas Angel Program (up to $10), and family members who wish to give are asked to contact Harris at (828) 684-6232 ext. 155 or tharris@christschool.org for more information.
