Christ School Shuts Out Asheville School in 'The Game'

On a cool October afternoon, thousands of Christ School and Asheville School students, faculty, alumni, and parents were on hand to witness the 92nd meeting of "The Game." In the first matchup of the now-oldest rivalry in the Carolinas, Asheville School shut out Christ School to the tune of 84-0 in 1911. In 2018, the Greenies returned the favor, defeating the Blues, 48-0 in an incredible team performance. Christ School came into the game with an 8-1 record and a shot at the D1 NCISAA playoffs on the line, while Asheville School was putting together a great season, coming in at 6-3.

After forcing the Blues to punt on the opening possession, the Greenies methodically marched down the field finishing with Keyvaun Cobb '19 scoring his first of two touchdowns in the game. The 24-yard touchdown run and a Henry Duggins '20 kick would make it 7-0 with 6:02 left in the first quarter. Just minutes later, after a fumble recovery by Ross Oakley '19, Cobb would score again, this time from 31 yards out, and Christ School took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.

Cobb would once again impact the game with an interception on the opening play of the second quarter. This time, Kaedin Robinson '19 and Navy Shuler '20 would connect for the 10-yard aerial score. The touchdown would be the 20th receiving score on the season for Robinson and the 39th passing score for Shuler. A second fumble recovery from Oakley on the Blues next possession set the Greenies up for a connection through the air between Aydan White '20 and Shuler '20 from 15 yards. With the Greenies defense holding the Blues to less than 60 yards for the game, a third touchdown pass from Shuler would find Brandon Stone '19 with 5:13 left in the first half.

In perhaps the most exciting play of the game, Asheville School lined up for the field goal with just 12 seconds in the first half. A muffed hold was picked up by defensive end Kiki Alcime '20 who with the protection of his Greenie teammates ran 83 yards for the fumble recovery touchdown! The play was culminated by the "Philly Special" two point conversion catch by quarterback Navy Shuler '20. At the half Christ School led 42-0 over the visiting Blues.

Dillon Tarves '20 tacked on a final touchdown in the third quarter from five yards to secure the seventh straight victory in the rivalry. The overall series remains in the Blues favor, 50-37-4, but the Greenies have made great strides securing 14 of 18 since 2000.

The Greenies will play next in the first round of the D1 NCISAA playoffs, this Friday at Trinity Christian in Fayetteville. More information to come.
