Wilton Graves ‘21 did not wait for summer learning experiences to come to him.

The Christ School junior spent a month of his break at residential academic programs hosted by Yale University and the University of Iowa.

Wilton’s first stop was the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio, which offered him the opportunity to hone his creative writing skills. The two-week program attracts aspiring high school-aged writers from around the country. The Iowa Young Writer’s Studio focuses on peer and instructor review of the universal elements required for quality pieces in poetry, fiction, and creative writing.

Wilton, whose hometown is Asheville, followed up the Iowa program with the Yale Young Global Scholars. Students from more than 100 countries come to Yale every summer for its academic enrichment and leadership program. The students participate in one of nine interdisciplinary sessions and immerse themselves in a global learning community.

Wilton said he was grateful for the exposure to world-renowned scholars on philosophy, law and government, and for the connections made with students from such varied backgrounds.
