Standing atop Mount Katahdin, Siler Sloan ’17 breathed it all in.
Siler took the final steps of his 2,190-mile, thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail on a clear day in Maine last month. The conditions only added to the grandeur of summiting Katahdin, the trail’s northernmost terminus.
Siler set out on the hike last March, and in order the Greenie saw parts of the following 14 states – Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
It has been estimated that more than 3 million people a year visit the world’s largest hiking-only footpath. Of that number, roughly over 3,000 people hike the full Appalachian Trail in a single year.
Siler is at least the second Christ School alumnus in two years to accomplish the feat – Trevor Murrah ’16 completed his hike last October.
