WEDDINGTON – Dawson Reeves ’24 has been raising his arms a lot lately.

The junior from Canton, N.C., broke the tape Saturday night with another career-defining win, taking first place in the mile at the Carolina Distance Carnival.

Dawson beat 377 other runners – so many that there were 22 sections on the heat sheets – with a time of 4 minutes, 12.50 seconds.

Runner-up Jacob Laney from Porter Ridge (4:13.60) has signed with the University of North Carolina, won multiple NCHSAA 4-A state championships in the past, and is North Carolina’s former indoor record-holder in the mile.

Dawson will no doubt run in college, too, if he desires.

He became a national champion for the first time in the mile (4:16.89) at last month’s adidas Track Nationals indoor meet. And his trademark finish-line celebration happened again in February when Dawson ran what was at the time North Carolina’s fastest indoor 800 meters (1:53.31) at the Liberty University Invitational.

There were five other Greenies in Saturday’s race – Luke Parrish '24 (71st place, 4:31.44), Kahzi Sealey '23 (89th, 4:34.90), Eyob Gill ’24 (109th, 4:37.10), Patrick Wang ’24 (180th, 4:49.30), and Mark Yee ‘24 (327th, 5:18.54).

Luke also broke 2:00 in the 800-meter run (24th place, 1:59.10).

Dawson’s younger brother, Dallas, came in third in the Middle School 1,600-meter run (4:37.80). Saturday's meet was held at Weddington High School and attracted runners from throughout the country.
