ASHEVILLE - John Barton ’25 swims year-round for a team called the Piranhas.
He positively chewed up the competition Wednesday at the Carolinas Athletic Association Championship Meet.
The junior from Asheville achieved a rare double with his first and second career conference championships in the 100-yard butterfly (52.87) and 500-yard freestyle (4:57.33).
John is Christ School’s first CAA champion in swimming since 2021 and one of the first-ever Greenies to win multiple races at the conference meet, which is traditionally held at Asheville School’s Ambler Pool. John competes outside of school for the YMCA of Western North Carolina Piranhas.
The Greenies were the third-place team in the CAA meet with a total of 24 personal records and four new state-qualifying swims.
Christ School is less than two weeks out from the NCISAA Division I state meet, which will be held Feb. 13 in Charlotte. The team has six seniors – Bradley Campbell ’24, Hardy Johnson ’24, Leo Lagutin ’24, Lucas Little ’24, Davis Mohorn ’24, and Tyler Thompson ’24.
