Dillon Invigorated for Another Year of Theater
First production is a month away
Mary Dillon has directed three-dozen plays at Christ School since 2001. Right now, number 37 is getting her undivided attention.
The Theater Department has three productions planned for the 2017-18 school year, starting with Paper or Plastic: A Conspiracy of Bagboys, which will run October 19-21. Paper or Plastic is an original work that was written for the Greenies by local playwright Travis Lowe.
"We're in the middle of rehearsals right now. It's so much fun to do an original play," Dillon said. "It's incredibly funny. My friend who wrote it reminds me of Neil Simon. He's written a comedy for us that teaches comedy structure. It's a silly, silly farce that I think people will enjoy."
Dillon is invigorated for another year of theater after attending the Broadway Teacher Workshop in New York City
from July 6-8, 2017. Teachers from the Kindergarten level through 12th grade got to interact with Broadway professionals and attend four shows: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Anastasia, Dear Evan Hansen, and Come From Away. Dillon said her favorite segment of the workshop was "Freestyle Rap and The New Broadway Musical," a class put on by members of the Freestyle Love Supreme improv group.
"It was an awesome experience," Dillon said. "The students here at Christ School are fabulous. I really enjoy them. And we'll have a new person, (English instructor) Joe Dalton, directing with us this season. I'm looking forward to it."
