Sophomore finding success at the college level for Wildcats

Michael Freeman '16 is making an impact for Davidson College golf, and he hasn't even declared a major yet. Freeman placed 20th in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament as a freshman. He was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week once. And this fall, Freeman was the third-lowest scorer (75.45) for the Wildcats in four events, culminating with last week's Auto Trader Collegiate Classic in Duluth, Georgia. College golf seasons are broken into two segments. Freeman's next tournament is not until February 26.

Question: How would you grade your performance so far this season?

Answer: Good. I felt like I had a lot of good rounds and helped the team out. I'm definitely playing better than this time last year. It's been kind of hit-and-miss with my ball-striking and my putting. I got my putting going really well in the first tournament, but haven't been able to get both of them going at the same time. I've had a lot of rounds from even par to two-over. I like the team and the group of guys that we have. Everyone is pretty positive.

Question: I understand you haven't declared a major, but will soon?

Answer: Yes, I haven't decided yet. I'm leaning towards Economics, maybe a minor in Math. I've got until the end of the year to decide. The classes here at Davidson are pretty tough. But the class sizes are small, and from my experience the teachers are always helpful. That's nice. It's definitely a unique place.

Question: We're in the middle of Asheville School Week. What you remember about that from your time at Christ School?

Answer: Honestly, it's a little overwhelming at first. I remember my freshman year, just sitting back and taking it all in. There is so much to participate in before the football game. I wasn't on the football team, but it was a lot of fun to cheer on the team and yell as loud as I could.

Answer: Looking back, did Christ School prepare you well for Davidson?

Answer: Definitely in the classroom. Some of the AP classes there definitely helped prepare me for some of the things I have to do now. Golf-wise, it helped having all those talented guys on the team. To have that competitive environment really made me want to be a better player. College golf is a little different. We generally play three rounds in two days. There is one day where you won't be able to do any school work. But I would say Christ School definitely helped me prepare for this experience and taught me the organization I needed to succeed.
