Christ School plays solid defense and executes well on offense to upset nationally ranked Christ the King 77-62 at the City of Palms Classic in Ft. Myers, Fl. Christ the King entered the game ranked #4 in the USA Today poll. Christ School next plays Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif) Monday, December 20 at 10pm.
The game was tied 16-16 after the 1st quarter of play and the Greenies slowly used their depth to pull away and outscored the Royals in each of the last 3 quarters of play. Christ School had 6 players in double figures to offset the 26 pt performance of Omar Calhoun.
Christ School trailed by as much as 5 pts early in the game, but Corban Collins (10 pts, 3 steals) hit a key 3-pointer in the last minute of the 1st quarter, as the Greenies closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 16-16. Rob Gray (13 pts, 6 assists) dropped in 7 pts in the 2nd quarter as the Greenies increased the lead to 35-22 with 2:28 to play in the half. Calhoun hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to keep the Royals close at 37-28.
The teams traded baskets in the 3rd quarter with the Greenies TD Dixon (14 pts) and Will Weeks (16 pts, 12 rebounds) leading the way by combining for 13 of the team's 21 pts. Christ School increased the lead by 2 pts and led 58-47. Calhoun was held to 1 pt in the final quarter and Christ School opened up a 20 point lead at 73-53 with only 3 minutes to play. Marshall Plumlee (11 pts, 14 rebs, 5 blocks) had 6 pts in the final quarter. Damarcus Harrison was the 6th Greenies in double figures with 11 pts.
