New Wellness Center 'a huge upgrade'

Enhanced facility ready for start of classes

The stone façade of the old 30 House dorm has seen a lot throughout 87 years at Christ School. Those rocks are getting a second life as the exterior of a new Wellness Center on the same site.

Contractors are putting the finishing touches on the 7,000 square foot Wellness Center this week. Danny Elmer, who is Director of Human Resources and Facilities, called it "a huge upgrade" for the Christ School community.

Among the features of the enhanced facility are:

  • Bed capacity for 12 boys in a temperature-controlled environment
  • 2 isolation rooms
  • 3 half bathrooms and 2 full bathrooms
  • Handicap accessibility
  • An improved treatment room
  • An in-house office for counselor Tom Sherry to provide student assessment and guidance

The Wellness Center is staffed by five experienced Residential Nurses and open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is a nurse on call during off hours.

The main floor of the new Wellness Center building is large enough at 5,000 square feet to also house Christ School's Advancement and Business offices, though they are separated from the medical space. There is 2,000 square feet of storage underneath the building. Work on the Wellness Center project began last fall.

The former Wellness Center is being utilized as well. Gardner House is the newest dormitory on campus, and was dedicated during May's Alumni Weekend. It houses 18 boys.
