First Day for 290 Boys Coincides With Eclipse

First Day for 290 Boys Coincides With Eclipse

Enrollment is second-highest in Christ School history

Monday figures to be anything but an ordinary start to classes.

An enrollment of 290 is the second-highest in Christ School's 117-year history. That student body includes boys from 19 different states and seven countries. Before really settling into a routine on their first day, the Greenies will be privy to an astronomical phenomenon: a total solar eclipse.

Thanks to the generosity of a Christ School donor, every boy is being provided a pair of safety-approved glasses to view the eclipse from 1:30 to 3:45 p.m. This is the first time since 1979 that a total solar eclipse has been visible from the contiguous United States.

Ron Ramsey chairs the Science Department and plans to use the eclipse as a teachable moment that extends far beyond Monday. "It's a great chance to ask ourselves, 'Why does something so amazing and dynamic not happen every year?'" Ramsey said. "How we develop our observational skills continues to change with technology and experience. An event like this allows us to learn from the natural world, and get students interested in something larger, something that is harder to get their heads around."

Registration Weekend came to an end Sunday with form trips and orientation. Later in the afternoon, Bennett David '18 gave the school year's first Senior Speech in St. Joseph's Chapel. And finally, all faculty and students came together in St. Joseph's for convocation, which included remarks from Headmaster Paul Krieger.

The academic year for Christ School stretches through graduation on May 20, 2018.
